Handmade raku fired tea jar ~

Raku firing is a Japanese ceramics technique that has been used for many centuries to create unique finishes to pottery.

This pot is “obvara raku” or “baltic raku”, meaning there is no glaze applied to the surface. The jar was removed from the fire at 1700 degrees and dipped into a solution of water, flour, yeast, & sugar. This burning process creates the surface design.

Raku-fired pieces are best suited for dry goods only, as they are fired at a lower temperature and are still porous.
